What is 360 video?

It is a video that is capturevd with a system of cameras that records a scene in all 360 degrees simultaneously. Those who watch it can rotate and pan the 360 video’s views to watch it in various angles. These videos usually have the “360 video” label in the lower left bottom of the screen and can be watched in any Android devices, iOS devices, or computers.

As of 2015 Youtube and Facebook started officially support 360 videos. For PC and Mac Chrome browser must be used.

How are 360 videos done?

If you want to have a 360 video from your wedding you can expect to see a dedicated 360 camera rig and sound operator at your event. That person is going to work only for that purpose. The special camera rig has multiple cameras synced together to capture full spherical view or the surrounding environment. I can be dedicated multi lens rigs from Nikon, Gopro, Samsung or Nokia.

The real work though starts at the editing stage. All footage must be synced and stitched using special dedicated stitching software like Autopano Kolor and others. The process is very long and very time consuming. The stitched footage can be later edited and cut in standard video software programs with additional soundtrack and effects.

The main player in VR Goggles industry Oculus Rift presented new VR Googles along with Samsung, Carl Zeiss and Sony. Considering the fact that Facebook acquired Oculus Company earlier in 2015 for whopping 20 billion dollars one must assume that 360 video industry is an absolute priority for manufactures, software makers and ultimately viewers.
